Hypocrisy

“What About ?”

  1. The word “hypocrite” literally means ________________.

Matthew 7:3-5, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Matthew 23:5,25, ”Everything they do is done for men to see… 25 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.”

Matthew 23:14,27-28, “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them… 27 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

  1. Those who authentically follow Jesus are marked by an honest   ____________________________, not controlled appearance.

Matthew 23:6, “They love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues.”

1 John 1:8, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

  1. The second mark of authentic spirituality is being

     _________________________.

“Christians are not cured of all sin and imperfection, but in becoming Christians they have clearly entered the hospital for treatment.”

1 Timothy 1:15-16, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”
